Firstly, it’s important to know your class and how to be effective at playing it. You need to know the rotation of spells and skills of your toon, to do the part you’re assigned to, smoothly.

Have at least an idea of the tactics your raid is going to apply for each encounter. If you don’t know what to do, a single wrong step might wipe the whole raid. Luckily, this guide has this aspect covered so I had nothing to worry about in any end game raid.
