This World of Warcraft Hunter Guide will give you an overview of the Hunter class, what its capabilities are, what drawbacks you should expect, and how to function in the class.
1.) About the Class
The first thing that you must understand is that a Hunter is a soloist. They can and do function well in groups but they excel at solo game play. You also need to understand that even though Hunters wear chain armor and have a Survival skill tree they are not tanks. You were given a ranged weapon and a pet for a reason, so use them. Simply put a Hunter without a pet and in melee range cannot generate the damage output that they can with their pet and ranged weapon. We are a ranged DPS class. If you want to melee DPS then start a DPS warrior or paladin.
2.) What Race Should I Pick?
If you’re on the Alliance side I recommend using Night Elves or Dwarves as Hunters. For Horde, Orc’s Troll’s, Tauren, and Blood Elves work well. Each race has its own unique set of strengths and each has the potential to be a great Hunter.
To start with you need to pick whether you’re going to side with Horde of Alliance. Next you might find it useful to spend a little time studying the perks each race has when they are Hunters. One thing I will note is that regardless of your race, if you have a good knowledge of the Hunter and how to use it, you will do well in the End Game.
3.) Leveling Up your Hunter
Leveling as a Hunter is in my opinion the easiest of all classes. Make good use of your pet and let it take the damage for you - don’t wrap it in cotton wool, you can always heal it and resurrect it later. It’s better to let your pet take a fall than you. If things get dire, throw your pet at the enemy and run away.
Make the most of your broad range of abilities. Hunters are equipped with a wide range of abilities including being able to resurrect and heal pets, engage numerous targets and use traps. If you take the time to learn what you’re capable of you will do much better in the long run.
4.) Selecting a Pet
Being a Hunter you’ll be able to tame animals. Its worth remembering that you pet will have a skill tree and acquire experience points as they go along. These points can be spent on enhancing abilities. You should also check to see the foods that your potential pet eats and make sure you have enough on hand. To do this go into the animals character sheet and move the mouse over the happiness symbol.
Happiness is another thing that you need to monitor closely. Happy well fed pets do more damage so when you see the icon on your pet window change from green to yellow you need to feed it.
5.) Talents
Hunters have 3 talent trees.
Beast Mastery - The talents here are aimed at making your pet tougher, stronger, and more difficult to kill.
Marksmanship - Focusing on this tree will help with your DPS output. You can significantly increase your DPS output if you work at this tree.
Survival - This tree helps most with crowd control and melee damage.
Choose a tree that’s going to suit your playing style. If you think you’re most likely going to go it alone, then Beast Mastery will work best. Marksmanship might be the correct choice for PvP. Survival is in my opinion the least important tree unless you are planning to go in hand to hand combatbut then if you are planning on this then maybe a different class would work better.
Hunters are probably the most all round character to have. They can dominate solo play and are very good gatherers, especially when equipped well. Hunters with good specs will work well in any situation.
