In WOW, as well as many other games, the term hunter refers to a class that uses long range weapons versus up close combat. This class is generally weak and not good at melee fighting. They use bullets or arrows fired from a safe distance. In WOW they also use pet systems and traps to vanquish their foes.

Selecting Race

If you have made the choice to play as a hunter you have to be very careful of the race you choose since that will have a big impact on your life as a hunter. Here are the races you can choose from: Night Elves, Dwarf, Draenei, Tauren, Troll, Orc, and Blood Elves. Here are the skills each race has:

1. Night Elves: Shadowmeld allows them to hide and quickness for extra dodge.

2. Dwarf: Gun Specialization which increases critical hit rate and Stonfeform can counter debuffs like disease, poison, bleeding.

3. Draenei: Can heal yourself or your pet; it also has Heroic Presence which improves hit by 1% for all member of the party.

4. Tauren: War Stomp helps them escape. Endurance improves base health by 5% and it stacks with Endurance Training.

5. Troll: Bow Specialization can add to their critical hit rate when using a bow, add this to berserking and they get a higher DPS. HP regeneration along with beast slaying are other nice features of a Troll.

6. Orc: Command increases pet damage by 5%. Blood Fury will boost their attack power.

7. Blood Elves: Arcane Torrent will silence enemies and refills their mana.

Each race has their own unique abilities that will support their life as a hunter. You should narrow your choices to Night Elves and Dwarf in the Alliance faction. Pick Orc, Troll or Tauren for Horde faction. These recommendations will become clear when you move on to the next step: selecting talents.

Talents Build

Hunters have three talent trees they can focus on: Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival. Different WoW Hunter guides might recommend different things so you need to pick the one that best suits your playing style.

Beast Mastery

Orc is best here due to their command traits which boost pets’ damage 5%. Orc is resistant to stun and by using Blood Fury they can boost their damage. Add a high DPS pet so you can deal more damage in PvP mode. A good tanking pet such as a boar helps with leveling.

Marksmanship

Dwarf and Troll are best for this path because both have weapon specialization so they can cause more damage. By adding a tank pet, like a boar, they can remain at a safe distance. Night Elves’ Shadowmeld is useful only in player versus player.

Survival

This type of hunter usually plays as a support in a group; they pull enemies to their group using their long range, and then buff their groups with aspects or aura; usually this hunter type doesn’t have that much DPS since they invest most of their points in Survival tree. Tauren is good choice for this role since it also has war stomp and increased health.
