The Mage is the king of burst DPS in World of Warcraft and are desired by most groups due to their damage output, intelligence buff, and the ability to provide health and mana regenerating food and drink.

When comparing a Mage to other classes, you’ll notice that Mages definitely lacks something when it comes to hit points. The are also far more limited in their fighting than other classes such as Warlocks and Hunters who have pets, the ability to heal themselves when hurt (Priests, Shaman, and Druids), they don’t even have heavy armor like Paladins and Warriors do. What the Mage has is control In order to successfully level a Mage you’ll need to learn how to master this.

Mages, like all other WoW classes have three skill trees. For Mages, the skill trees are Arcane, Fire, and Frost. Frost is the skill that has most control out of the three. Arcane and Fire both lack a lot in terms of control but can be devastating for opponents.

When you’re specialized in the Frost skill tree you won’t have the same power as you would have had with Arcane or Fire but you will gain a heck of a lot of control. The Frost tree can be excellent when leveling solo, especially if you learn special talents that work to give your chill effects more chance to freeze the target for longer, lower the movement rate of your target, and stun your target.

One of the tactics that you might use to level is to pick an area with a large number of mobs in a general area. To be safer you should pick an area where the mobs are green to you. Start gathering them up and when you have a number around you pop your Frost Nova and root them in place. Jump back out of melee range and cut loose with Blizzard. This is a tactic that I have used on a number of Mage characters that I have built over the years and it really works.

I know there are those who are going to say that you should be doing mobs your own level but I beg to differ. Let’s play out two separate scenarios.

In scenario one we will assume I’m out fighting mobs my own level. Given I don’t have strong armor and the mobs hit hard, I’ll have to take them out one at a time. At an estimate lets say I can kill one every 3 minutes, that means I’d get through 20 in an hour all going well. At 200 points per kill, I’ll have a grand total of 4000 experience points after an hours killing.

In scenario 2 we will head out into a zone where there are a heap of mobs that are all green to me. I start rounding them up 5 at a time and going at them by freezing them and then using Blizzard. I’ll earn about 500 experience points for each group of mobs that I kill. I kill these off at about the same time it took me to kill 1 in scenario 1. I can therefore make 10000 experience points per hour compared to 4000 in scenario 1. I’ll also get to loot a heap more mobs meaning I’ll be able to make a lot more cash.

Leveling a Mage in World of Warcraft is not as difficult as you might think. Sure they have low hit points, cannot heal, have cloth armor and no pet but if you learn to exercise the art of control you have the ability to destroy a large amount of creatures in a very short time.
