« World of Warcraft Guide: The Perfect Beginner’s Ally   World Of Warcraft and Increasing Your Character’s Level »

by Daniel Mayer

Since World of Warcraft is pretty much like the real world, it means you have to make gold in order to progress through the game. While some people simply quest or others vendor all their drops, you can take advantage of recipes in order to make a bunch of gold. Yep, it’s amazing how easy it is to make money this way and yet most gamers have no idea it’s possible. So take the next few minutes to truly understand the abilities of recipes, and how they can literally make you rich in the game.

However, we all have to start at the beginning, which in this case is level 1. In order to learn the various recipes out there, you have to be able to build your profession. Each progression usually hits around 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, and 450. You can make weapons, armor, food, potions, glyphs, mechanicals, enchantments, and a plethora of other fantastic things. The only problem is, you will level fast in the beginning, but as you make your way to higher numbers, it will cost more for the mats. Then again, the more it costs the more you’ll be able to charge in the Auction House (hopefully). However, if you want to skip all the purchase of “mats” or farming for them, just sell the recipes themselves.

Recipes are known by many different names in World of Warcraft. Recipes that are used by the professions of Leatherworking and Tailoring are often referred to as “Patterns”. When it comes to recipes that are specific to the profession of First Aid, they are commonly referred to as “Manuals” and even a “Formula”. For those specializing in Engineering, the recipe is identified as “Schematics”. The Jewelcrafting profession will refer to recipes as “Designs”. Those that work in Enchanting will call their recipes “Formulas”. Blacksmithing professionals in World of Warcraft call recipes “Plans”. Alchemy specialists will call their recipes by what they are - “Recipes”. The same holds true for those that specialize in Cooking as a profession. If you plan to make gold in World of Warcraft by buying and reselling recipes for a profit, it is important that you are able to properly identify these products in the game.

Alright, are you ready to start making gold using recipes? The best way to start is by analyzing the AH or downloading the “Auctioneer” add-on. This allows you to find all the recipes that are being undersold. This way, you can purchase them, then turn around and sell them for the regular price. Once you’ve done everything you could here, it’s time to look at the popularity and level of the recipe. It’s safe to say that the majority of the beginner level recipes won’t sell for the same amount as higher levels. This is especially true if you come across a gray or white recipe. The good news is it won’t cost much for the materials, but it won’t sell for much either. Nowadays you might get lucky and receive 50 silver to about 6 gold for a smaller recipe, but it depends on how easy someone can obtain it in the World of Warcraft world.

Remember, this quality of recipe is likely to be purchased by low-level characters that are not too advanced when it comes to their gold accumulation. Selling for under a gold is more likely to bring in much more gold than selling for a gold or more. An example of a recipe that classifies under “Common” in WoW is the Cooking recipe called “Brilliant Smallfish”. Naturally, there are low-level recipes that fall into this category for each and every profession. It is important to acquire as many as possible in order to increase the amount of gold that you are able to personally accumulate.

Once you reach a certain skill level, you’ll be able to hit the Green Recipes. These are considered to be “Uncommon” and will normally cost more than everything except for the blue and purple recipes. One thing to understand is that you can purchase some of these from vendors scattered across the land for small amounts, then turn around and sell them in the AH for more. See, it’s all about supply and demand, so if people don’t know where to access them throughout World of Warcraft, then chances are they’ll purchase it in the AH if they need it. Just remember you shouldn’t buy a bunch of them, then place them all in the AH at the same time. Doing so will only give someone else the opportunity to come in and undercut you.

There are two more quality types of recipes that can be purchased in World of Warcraft. These are “Rare Quality” and “Epic Quality”. Rares are identified by a blue colored name and epics are identified by a purple colored name. If you stumble upon these recipes, you can plan to make a lot of gold in World of Warcraft. It is not at all uncommon to see recipes of this nature to sell for hundreds if not thousands of gold. Just getting a couple of these and placing them on the Auction House can result in a lot of sales! Most upper level areas, like Northrend, will have vendors that specialize in selling these types of recipes. In addition to this, mobs will drop unique recipes that can result in high profits.

See, you don’t have to spend hours on end running quests and Instances to make gold in World of Warcraft. All you have to do is become a WoW day trader and find recipes that are cheap, purchase them, and then sell them for more. Obviously it’s going to take some time to get down all the various ways to do this (like utilizing add-ons), the end result will definitely be a positive one. It’s just one of the many gold making secrets out there, so start getting higher earnings and be successful by building your recipe empire.
